I am currently reading:
Before and Again by Barbara Delinsky
Mackenzie Cooper took her eyes off the road for just a moment but the resulting collision was enough to rob her not only of her beloved daughter but ultimately of her marriage, family, and friends―and thanks to the nonstop media coverage, even her privacy. Now she lives in Vermont under the name Maggie Reid, in a small house with her cats and dog. She’s thankful for the new friends she’s made―though she can’t risk telling them too much. And she takes satisfaction in working as a makeup artist at the luxurious local spa, helping clients hide the visible outward signs of their weariness, illnesses, and injuries. Covering up scars is a skill she has mastered.
Her only goal is to stay under the radar and make it through her remaining probation. But she isn’t the only one in this peaceful town with secrets. When a friend’s teenage son is thrust into the national spotlight, accused of hacking a powerful man’s Twitter account, Maggie is torn between pulling away and protecting herself―or stepping into the glare to be at their side. As the stunning truth behind their case is slowly revealed, Maggie’s own carefully constructed story begins to unravel as well. She knows all too well that what we need from each other in this difficult world is comfort. But to provide it, sometimes we need to travel far outside our comfort zones.
I’m a little late getting to this ARC (it was published yesterday), but I’m hoping to have a review posted by this weekend so keep an eye out for it!
I finished reading:
I didn’t get a lot of reading done this week, but I finished The Devil’s Half Mile (which was a great book!) and read one more Mary Higgins Clark book: Two Little Girls in Blue. For some reason, I didn’t really like it as much as the Mary Higgins Clark book that I read last week (On The Street Where You Live), but I’m hoping this one was just a fluke. There are still a couple more of her books that I haven’t read yet in that box of books that was gifted to me.
What I’m reading next:
The Light of the Fireflies by Paul Pen
A haunting and hopeful tale of discovering light in even the darkest of places.
For his whole life, the boy has lived underground, in a basement with his parents, grandmother, sister, and brother. Before he was born, his family was disfigured by a fire. His sister wears a white mask to cover her burns.
He spends his hours with his cactus, reading his book on insects, or touching the one ray of sunlight that filters in through a crack in the ceiling. Ever since his sister had a baby, everyone’s been acting very strangely. The boy begins to wonder why they never say who the father is, about what happened before his own birth, about why they’re shut away.
A few days ago, some fireflies arrived in the basement. His grandma said, There’s no creature more amazing than one that can make its own light. That light makes the boy want to escape, to know the outside world. Problem is, all the doors are locked. And he doesn’t know how to get out.…
This book has been sitting on my Kindle since early April, but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. It looks really good though, so I’ve decided it’s going to be my next read.
So that’s my WWW Wednesday for this week. What have YOU read this week?
