This week’s question:
For all of you worker bees out there! How do you balance having a day job/career and managing your blog at night? Is it hard or easy to do, and what do people in your work life think of your blogs? (submitted by Danielle @ PoetryBooksYA)
What a great question!
My answer is going to be a bit different since I am not actually working outside of the house right now. I quit my full time job and became a stay-at-home-mom a little over a year ago. So I’m lucky in that I don’t have a day job or career to juggle, but that doesn’t mean that my days are spent lazing around my house and reading books or working on my blog whenever I want… I have 3 amazing but very energetic kids, ages 6, 7, and 10. Most of my days are spent playing referee, breaking up fights, cleaning up messes, and trying to prevent the ever dreaded summer vacation funk! I take them to the park, the lake, and on educational trips as much as possible. We also do crafts, play games, assemble puzzles, watch TV shows and movies*, and yes, I introduce them to as many books as possible. I’m constantly trying to instill a healthy love of reading in my kids.
*Quick side note: right now we’re working our way through Season 1 of Anne With An E, a TV show based on the classic novel Anne of Green Gables. It’s on Netflix and it’s amazing! Everyone should seriously check it out, especially if you’re a fan of the book like I am. You can thank me later. 😉
Of course, I also have to make time for all of the usual stuff: cooking, cleaning, and laundry; grocery shopping; doctors and dentist appointments; school stuff; meetings with speech and occupational therapists; and social/family obligations. It seems like there’s never enough time in the day!
Occasionally I get the chance to work on my blog or read during the day, but it’s usually full of distractions and interruptions. So I try to get as much done as possible in my free time after the kids are in bed (which is 8:30 during the summer). When I’m feeling ambitious, I’ll even get a couple extra posts typed up in a single night and schedule them for later. But I’ll admit, I still don’t get as much blog work done during that time as I probably should. Since it’s my only kid-free time, it’s also my only chance to read books uninterrupted, watch TV shows and movies that do NOT air on kids channels, use social media and catch up on the news, play games on my phone, or spend time with my husband. I really need to get better at time management and start using my scheduling tools more…
As far as the second part of the question – It’s certainly not easy, but I acknowledge that I actually have it a lot easier than a people who work full time in a traditional job. And as for what people in my real life think about my blog, I don’t really talk about it much, but they are all very supportive whenever I do mention it. I have my husband and mother-in-law read over my reviews sometimes before I post them (to check for grammatical and spelling errors) and my mom actually follows my blog (I inherited my love of reading from her). Otherwise, my blog is completely separate from my personal life.
What about you? If you have a blog, how do you balance your day job/career with managing your blog? Leave me a comment below!
